The Director of 'Australian Bushfire Safety and Planning', Mr John Delany, possesses vast experience in bushfire suppression and mitigation gained during an association exceeding thirty eight years with the NSW Rural Fire Service after commencing as a volunteer firefighter in 1980. John held several strategic positions as a volunteer firefighter including Captain of a local brigade through to Group Captain in a command and planning role on the ‘fire ground’.

John worked in the bushfire safety consultancy industry for approximately three years before being invited to join the RFS as a staff member in the Development Assessment and Planning area in 2004.

John has just recently finished a 14 year career at the RFS State HQ in Sydney during which time he held positions as a Development Control Officer, Coordinator in Hazard Management Services, was ranked as an Inspector in Operational Response and finished his RFS career as a Development Planning and Policy Officer.

John holds a Graduate Diploma in Design for Bushfire Prone Areas, several internal RFS qualifications and completed the RFS Fire Behaviour Analysts Course in 2016.

John was highly involved in the first review of RFS document ‘Planning for Bushfire Protection’ in 2006 and again with the current review of the document. His involvement in the development assessment area saw him realise the need to determine a better methodology to address low risk vegetation which was until just recently assessed as a fully developed fire.

He moved from the Operational Response area into a Policy and Project Officer roll in 2014 which provided the opportunity to develop such a methodology and has utilised existing science to determine an appropriate approach to measure the impact of low risk fires on the bushland interface. This has proved to reduce the financial and ecological impact to a development site.

John is passionately committed to provide professional advice in regards to life safety and the protection of property against the impacts of bushfire for developments located on Bushfire Prone Land.

John developed the 'Short Fire Run' methodology whilst employed at the NSW RFS and is considered an expert on short fire run applications.
